earlier today. karen? ((karen castro)) >> the two families claim ccsd never notified them about the bullying, even after one of the two victims reported it to school administrators. it wasn't until one of the moms overheard the two victims talking it that she became aware of what was going on. according to the lawsuit, ccsd also failed to investigate the report, which is in violation of the law. during opening statements, attorneys lai occurred. the two young victims were then 6th-graders at greenspun middle school. one of the boys testified... another boy began calling him homophobic names in band class. the young victim said he reported the incident to the dean and he was called in to talk about it but his parents were never notified and his bully was not disciplined. meanwhile, he said the name calling escalated to physical aggression. at one point the victim says his bully stabbed him in his private

because he was afraid. attorneys said the second victim was being bullied after he tried to stand up for his friend... and was being made fun of because of his height and weight. on one occasion, the bully hit the second victim with a trombone. attorneys say it got so bad, the second victim was planning to end his life. ((attorney: why were you going to do that? victim: because i didn't see like-- other options.)) ((karen castro)) plaintiff's attorneys didn't set out a case for discrimination based on perceived sexual orientation, as stated in the lawsuit. they say... when one of the victims first reported the bullying, he never mentioned the homophobic slurs. the defense also questioned the boys about the order of events... often referring to their disposition when the victims stated they didn't remember certain details. commissioners put their stamp of approval on a couple of critical bills that passed during the recent special session. the first one... is the room tax increase for an n-f-l stadium and convention center expansion. commissioner chris giunchigliani was the only 'no' vote. the county will back the bonds that will pay for the 750-million dollars in public contribution toward stadium construction... which will be repaid by a room-tax increase./// ((dave courvoisier)) also passing today... is the so- called 'more cops tax.' a one- tenth of a percent sales tax increase will go into that's expected to raise nearly 40- million- dollars in its first year... which would allow for the hiring of 315 more officers valley- wide. metro would get the bulk of those./// ((denise valdez)) a pahrump woman is behind bars on bail... awaiting extradition to houston where she faces charges for child endangerment. >> this ... after investigators say 34-year-old trisha meyer let exotic animals roam her home, with a juvenile.

neighbor last week. they found 3 tigers in the backyard .. contained only by a 4-foot fence. there were also 8 monkeys... a skunk.. and a fox inside her home. the animals have since been taken into protective custody. meyer will be extradicted to houston to face charges./// ((denise valdez)) we told you about it yesterday... today it's official. uber pool is now an option for everyone in and around las vegas. the feature on the ride-sharing app gives riders the chance to hop in with others head making the trip cheaper and cutting down on congestion throughout the city. uber says on average... rides taken with the "pool" feature are about half the cost of a standard ride: (( eric wimer//general manager, uber nevada "at the end of the day we're trying to provide alternative transportation options to get around town, this one specifically being one of our most affordable ones." )) ((dave courvoisier)) >> while this feature is new to las vegas... uber pool is already availble in 30 other cities around the world. but we can't forget "uber

arrived in the valley earlier this year./// ((dave courvoisier)) on the other side of las vegas's ride-sharing empire... lyft is undergoing some changes too. the company is doing away with it's iconic pink moustache... and replace it with beacons. they're called "amps"... and will sit on the dashboard of lyft cars starting january first. it will help riders know exactly which car is picking them up... by lighting up a certain color that's also shown on your smartphone. lyft says this new feature will be especially helpful at night and ((dni crushed by a streetlight falling over right outside her home. no one crashed into the pole ... it simply fell over due to rust. so who's responsible for the damage? the victim. consumer advocate michelle mortensen joins us now with a preview of her special report tonight at a 11 ... about a nevada state law you probably don't know about but should. whatever ... the state, county or city agency that put up and maintains the light .. isn't responsible. this street light crashed on one local woman's car ... and even her insurance company was shocked the county wasn't liable. but a law on the books since the 60's trumped anything anyone thought. in fact ... just hours after the crash occurred ... a rep from the county allegedly told the victim ... this whole incident... a light pole falling on her car .. was her fault. the las vegas casino resort that opened just after 9/11 is celebrating a milestone today. the palms is turning 15. ((dave courvoisier)) >> 8 news now anchor paul joncich talked to some of the employees who've been there since day one. ((paul joncich)) the palms has done remarkably well considering it opened just two months after 9/11. think about it, that was a time when many americans were afraid to get on an airplane. but on opening night, stars like pamela anderson and paris hilton came out, and the palms never vegas cemented its image as one of the hottest properties off strip. some people consider george maloof a marketing genius for that move. many of it's current employees have been there since day one. including director of banquet operations brian cunningham, who's first job was as a server at n9ne steakhouse. for the east part of the valley where we're typically warmer since we're lower in elevation. cooler mid to low 70's for the west side in the foothills from centennial hills through summerlin as we cooled off there. colder up in the kyle canyon with a morning start in the high 30's again. ................................ ... ............. regional temps also staying warm from laughlt especially. even saw near 80 degree temps down the colorado river valley from mesquite through boulder city as well. colder temps in the central great basin and mild over the hump in pahrump again today. changes in the forecast for late week however where jackets will be needed. ..................... .............. ................ still above average temps remian for the souther portions of the u.s with highs in the 80's in dallas and of course in new
